Narrative writing

for Advocacy

Regardless of your field, area of expertise, or passions, narratives are crucial for advocacy work. And yet, even when we are surrounded by compelling stories to further our work, developing these narratives is complex and challenging work. This workshop not only offers writers the tools to find, research, develop, and craft strong, useful narratives, but also allows participants the crucial time and space to consider the nuances and hurdles of such writing. Drawing on nonfiction narratives from in and outside of advocacy spaces, participants will gain new strategies for crafting thoughtful, convincing arguments through stories.

Outcomes

In this workshop, participants will learn to:

  • Recognize and create opportunities for effective storytelling

  • Identify the elements of a “good story” that will compel their specific target audience to act

  • Consider elements of narrative structure and momentum will serve their texts rhetorically

  • Understand the concept of “framing” and begin to build or revise their own narrative frames

  • Make ethical decisions about representation, messaging, and which stories not to tell

Standard workshops are typically limited to 12 participants to ensure active engagement and individual feedback. If you have a larger group, please get in touch to talk about your options.
