Clarity and concision

This workshop focuses on clarity and concision at the sentence level and is appropriate for teams in the workplace struggling to communicate complex ideas in a small space—whether by email, report, digital spaces, or any other form of writing. Participants are asked to arrive with authentic workplace documents to assess, evaluate, and learn from as we take a rhetorical approach to clarity and concision; this means considering audience needs, purpose, and document forms above even more than “cutting” words.

Outcomes

In this workshop, participants will learn to:

  • Take stock of what’s most important in a document prioritize information

  • Ask the key rhetorical questions that will allow them to get their message across to a particular audience, in a particular form, as briefly as possible

  • Understand that concision is much more about engaging and holding onto your reader than it is about length

  • Consider emphasis and structure as tools for clarity and concision

  • Be a better sentence-level of their own writing and the writing of their colleagues

Standard workshops are typically limited to 12 participants to ensure active engagement and individual feedback. If you have a larger group, please get in touch to talk about your options.
